Wisconsin Media Day Notebook

MADISON, Wis. — For the first time since the Big Ten Championship Game was introduced in 2011, Wisconsin has gone two consecutive seasons without reaching Indianapolis.

That is not sitting well with the Badgers heading into 2022.

“At Wisconsin, we’re expected to win every game. We’re expected to win the Big Ten,” said junior outside linebacker Nick Herbigwho had 9.0 sacks last season.

UW was in the driver’s seat heading into the regular season finale at Minnesota. However, the Gophers upended and stunned the Badgers 23-13 in Minneapolis on a chilly November night, which ended with the UM faithful rushing the field and mocking their border rival by playing ‘Jump Around’ during the post game hoopla.

While the media picked UW to win the West and return to Indianapolis for the first time since 2019, that’s not good enough for the Badgers.

Once again, Ohio State, who is also looking to avenge a hiccup in their regular season finale loss to rival Michigan, is the overwhelming favorite to hoist the Big Ten title trophy in December.

Meanwhile, UW was given the third-best odds to win the league, behind the Buckeyes and Wolverines, something the program hasn’t done since 2012.

“Personally, and as a team, this is a place where you always have a chip on your shoulder,” junior quarterback Graham Mertz said. “Whether it’s outside noise and people saying you can’t do something, that’s what you get when you come here.

“That’s what we love. That’s what we thrive on.”
